Abstract
Fresh and frozen aortic homografts were implanted in twenty-one dogs. Ten received
cortisone and eleven were used as controls.
The cortisone-treated animals had an increased mortality rate. They showed less connective
tissue reaction, both grossly and microscopically. There was subjective evidence of
decreased healing. Cortisone had no effect on the frequency or extent of thrombosis
in the grafts. Re-endothelialization was apparently normal in rate. Condensation of
the elastic fibers and degeneration and phagocytosis of the graft muscle cells were
reduced.
The results were not statistically significant.
We conclude that cortisone, under the conditions of this experiment, exerts little
if any beneficial effect on aortic homografts. Some undesirable side effects were
seen.
