Abstract
- 1.1. The literature pertaining to hemangioma of the liver in the newborn is reviewed. The high incidence of necrosis and rupture with fatal intra-abdominal hemorrhage in the early hours of life is emphasized. In all 3 untreated cases, death from rupture and hemorrhage occurred in the first week of life. Of the 2 patients operated upon, one became symptomatic in the early hours of life and extensive necrosis of the hemangioma was present at operation on the fifth day, while in the other the mass became clinically apparent the second week of life and was unassociated with necrosis or hemorrhage.
- 2.2. A new case of giant cavernous hemangioma of the liver in a newborn is reported. A large mass was present at birth. Progressive enlargement of the mass was observed in the early hours after birth. Successful excision by left hepatic lobectomy was carried out at the age of 64 hours. There was extensive necrosis of the cavernous hemangioma.
- 3.3. Hemangioma of the liver should be included among those disorders of the newborn which require operative treatment in the early hours of life.
