Temporary cardiopulmonary bypass in the management of penetrating wounds of the heart

      Abstract

      Penetrating wounds of the heart may result in acquired intracardiac defects similar to congenital defects. Five such cases have been seen at the Jefferson Davis Hospital, Houston, Texas. One patient with an acquired interventricular septal defect was seen prior to the availability of present techniques of open-heart surgery. Subsequently, 3 cases of traumatic aortic-right ventricular fistulas and one of traumatic interventricular septal defect were successfully managed by primary nonoperative measures followed by definitive repair of the defect with temporary cardiopulmonary bypass after a precise anatomical diagnosis was made.
