Preparation of surgical implants from silicone rubber by means of a postforming technique

      Abstract

      • 1.
        1. The properties of silicone rubber which contribute to its suitability for surgical implantation are described and several surgical applications presently used are noted.
      • 2.
        2. Some difficulties of established methods of molding silicone rubber are recorded.
      • 3.
        3. A postforming technique which facilitates the preparation of silicone rubber implants of intricate shapes is presented: the implant is vulcanized in a mold of comparatively simple design and can then be given intricate curvatures without the need for additional complex and expensive molds.
      • 4.
        4. A simple apparatus for executing this postforming operation is described.
      • 5.
        5. The physicochemical processes taking place in the rubber are discussed.
