Abstract
- 1.1. A case of spontaneous enterocutaneous fistula secondary to incarcerated umbilical hernia is reported.
- 2.2. Regional enteritis is the most common cause of spontaneous cutaneous fistula, which accounts for up to 16 percent of the complications of regional enteritis.
- 3.3. Spontaneous fistulas are reported to occur in as many as 12 percent of the cases of abdominal actinomycosis.
- 4.4. Congenital retention of the omphalomesenteric duct may cause a spontaneous fistula. This usually occurs in infants, but has been reported in a 21-year-old patient.
- 5.5. Perforated duodenal ulcer and blunt abdominal trauma were the predominant causes of spontaneous fistulas in the older literature.
- 6.6. Small-bowel malignancy, intestinal foreign bodies, diverticula of the small intestine, infections of the small intestine, osteomyelitis of the hip, and tuberculosis are not significant causes of spontaneous enterocutaneous fistula.
