The limitations of heparin therapy after arterial reconstruction

      Abstract

The role of platelet thrombosis in occlusion of arteries is emphasized and contrasted with the importance of fibrin formation in veins. The feeble effect of heparin in protecting against thrombotic occlusion after arterial reconstruction is explained by the failure of the drug to inhibit the adhesiveness of blood platelets and its inability to block aggregation of platelets induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP).
The administration of heparin after arterial reconstruction is discouraged.
