Effect of parathyroidectomy on polycythemia vera

Hyperparathyroidism caused by a solitary parathyroid adenoma or multigland disease can occur in association with other malignancies. Parathyroid hyperplasia occurs in association with pancreatic endocrine tumors or medullary thyroid carcinoma in patients with MEN 1 or MEN 2, respectively. Occasionally patients with hyperparathyroidism can present with synchronous or metachronous malignancies, most commonly well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, and bladder cancer. An association between hyperparathyroidism and polycythemia vera has been described,

and there is a suggestion that surgical cure of the hyperparathyroidism may induce remission of the myeloproliferative disorder. We describe a patient who demonstrated a significant improvement in polycythemia after successful parathyroidectomy.
