Elizabeth “Betsy” Johnston Cole, Executive Vice President of Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research (TIRHR), has >30 years of experience in investment banking, strategic planning, and finance, including the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Booth Creek Ski Holdings, Inc, the owner and/or operator of multiple ski resorts including Northstar at Tahoe. Previous positions held by Ms Cole include Vice President of Business Development for Vail Resorts, Inc, Chief Financial Officer of Petrowax PA Inc, Vice President of Aurora Capital Partners, and First Vice President, Financial Institutions/Corporate Finance of Drexel Burnham Lambert, Inc.
James D. Hood, PhD, the Chief Operating Officer and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of TIRHR, has >50 years of experience in the development, manufacture, and sales of high-technology electronic equipment and systems with 30 years of executive management responsibilities, including Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and Executive in Residence. Dr Hood was the Vice President of Engineering of the company that developed Digital Subsciber Line (DSL).
Dennis Matthews, PhD, the Chief Scientific Officer of TIRHR, was Associate Director for Biomedical Technology of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Davis and the Director of the National Science Foundation Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology. Dr Matthews now is a Professor Emeritus in the University of California, Davis Department of Neurological Surgery and a member of the Biomedical Engineering, Applied Sciences, and Clinical Sciences Graduate Groups. He also is a previous Program Leader and Division Leader at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and currently is in charge of developing new biotechnology program opportunities. Dr. Matthews has >35 years of experience in building and leading large scientific research and development programs that focus on optical and x-ray imaging technologies, medical device creation, and translation, as well as forming public-private partnerships for commercialization.
Thomas D. Hobday, President of TIRHR, is a retired Assistant Dean for Health Sciences Advancement at the University of California, Davis Health System. Prior to joining the University of California, Davis, he had >30 years in the industrial insurance industry, and since has had 20 years of experience in health care administration and development. He also served for 3 years as the National Chairman of Fund Raising for the American Cancer Society and was the only lay member on the National Research Grant Review Committee. In 2013 and 2014, he served on a grant development advisory committee with the National Science Foundation and also on 2 occasions as a grant reviewer for that institution.
