Inequity in access to surgical care is pronounced for those living in low- and middle-income
countries (LMICs). Surgery has often been portrayed as a luxury for these populations.
Nearly 40% of global health funding is disproportionately allocated to infectious
diseases while only 1.3% is allocated to non-communicable diseases.
