Pulmonary decortication in the treatment of early pyogenic empyema

      Abstract

      • 1.
        1. The rationale for pulmonary decortication in the treatment of selected cases of early pyogenic empyema is presented.
      • 2.
        2. The pathology of empyema is reviewed, and the rationale based thereon.
      • 3.
        3. The indications for primary and secondary decortication, and the optimum time for their performance, are given.
      • 4.
        4. Five patients so treated are reported upon.
      • 5.
        5. In two cases with treatment by primary decortication, prompt cure of the empyema followed.
      • 6.
        6. In three cases with treatment by secondary decortication, marked improvement followed.
